Whats ready right now in the garden?
Spring is always an exciting time of year - well for me anyway, new growth and everything waking up after the cold, dark winter.
It can also sometimes be a bit of an in-between season waiting for the main rush of produce to start. Currently we have a few things going here seasonally. As the weather and soil warms we can start to plant more and more in the garden. Down here in the south its still early enough for frost tender vegetables like corn, courguettes and pumpkins that can eaily be started later.
Globe Artichokes - Very impressive in the garden, attracts pollinators and delicious too!
A bit of work to get to the heart of the matter however - Learn more about how to grow and harvest artichokes here. Purchase one of our young plants here.
Rainbow lights Silverbeet - This has been growing all winter and will soon self seed and proliferate around the garden for seasons to come. I don’t sow it anymore. A versatile vegetable that can be used many ways. Click here for recipes.
Eyptian walking onions - Use the greens like spring onions and the bases whites like onion.
The best part is they’re perennial so just keep on growing and multiplying. Purchase here.
Rhubarb - Awakening now after winter dormancy and able to be used as soon as the red stems are long enough. Purchase here. Or click here for recipes.
Lettuces - Easy and quick to grow year round. Who doesn’t love a fresh, home grown spring salad?
Radishes - Easy to grow and oh so fast! We favour the daikon style as it tends to be more verstatile and grows to a bigger size. It’s nice in salads, pickled or raw like a crunchy snack.
Asparagus - The epitome of spring vegetables is just starting to pop up. We have purple and green growing here at Wingatui Homestead. For Asparagus recipes - Click here
