Mashua is a flowering, perennial climber in the nasturtium family native to the Andes, mainly Peru and Bolivia.
It is grown for its edible tubers which can be eaten raw or cooked. It can grow up to 2–4 m in height and the flowers and leaves are also edible. The plant is disease resistant and can grow in a wide range of soil types. Protein content of the tubers is 7-15% and are considered a good source of carbohydrates, vitamin c and beta-carotene. Very easy to grow.
Chickens will also eat the greens. In winter these will be sent as tubers, in summer as a potted plant.
