Creeping violet

$4.99

Viola Odorata - Wild violet, have heart-shaped leaves with small violet/purple flowers. Perennial that can self seed as well as spread through underground rhizomes. It can be invasive but can also be crowed out by bigger plants.
Low to the ground - a good woodland type ground cover.
The leaves are kidney-shaped.

The flowers are edible (so are the leaves) and have been used in confectionery and cosmetics due to their delicate scent. A nice addition to add to fill a gap and add another edible to your garden.

Pear grafting for 2025 done and dusted!! Good feeling to get it done. Pears can be a little trickier as you need an interstem to graft most varieties into a quince root-stock. I use both doyenne du commice and beurre hardy as my interstems. Some tree

I never thought I would be able to grow passionfruit in Dunedin... But here we go! Yes it's inside a tunnel house but needs must. Pretty sure Rory from George Street Orchard has one outside but I'm guessing his wee micro climate protects from frost
A bit of an experiment this year. I have given three of the mother cluckers free rein and destroy at whim. We have struggled with cooch grass in this tunnel for a few years now and it's a lot of work pulling it all out during and at the end of each s
Today's mission! Tidying the berry tunnel, pruning back, weeding and mulching with acidic pine needles. Berries like acid additions to the soil, especially blueberries and raspberries. Had a good go at the redcurrants and gooseberries too. More berr
Its a good time of year to prune your apple trees! Whilst trees are dormant you can easily see their structure and branch formation. It also means they will put all their fresh spring growth into productive wood that you want for more fruit! For this
Artichoke time! Jerusalem artichokes are another good under the ground crop that can surprise you with how much they will produce. Stock like to eat the leaves and tubers too so great addition to the lifestyle block. I dot these all around the garden
It's Mashua time! Native to the Andes this prolific edible root crop is a must for any food garden. The tubers, leaves and flowers are all edible. The chickens like the greens too!
Grab some to try for dinner or plant in the garden.

Plenty of winter colour interest still around! When I'm planning a section of garden I try to make it a mix of evergreen and perennial, texture and different leaf structures for year round interest. The red and yellow stemmed dogwoods are a real stri
What to do with the last of the chilli's? These guys have taken so long to get going and although we're now having frosts they're still going! I have a mix of Anaheim, habanero, wild fire, jalapeno, thai and ricotto. The latter being so damn hot! Jus
