Cape Gooseberry is a species of plant in the nightshade family, closely related to a tomatillo. It is native to chile and peru.
Grows in temperate climates and is frost tender, however, we have it growing here and we get good frosts and it tends to come away again in spring. May grow as an annual in a harsher climate and a perennial in a milder climate.
The plant develops into a multi branched shrub, followed by many stems with furry heart shaped leaves, the drooping bell shaped flowers (both male and female) are yellow with a brown centre. They develop into a papery husk which starts out green then as the fruit within ripens it turns brown and dries out. The fruit inside is ripe when it has turned orange and or has fallen off.
