At Wingatui Homestead we sell what we produce ourselves and what grows well in Otago and share it with you so you can do the same!

 What we do……

Wingatui Homestead is a backyard nursery located in Mosgiel, Otago.
We wanted to create a productive edible garden & a self regulating eco-system using the 7 layers of permaculture and by observing natural rhythms.
Sharing our vision for the future and empowering others to create and build on their
own edible spaces.

Welcome to our Online Shop

Plants are grouped by type or usage. Fruit trees are pip grown or grafted onto rootstocks in august/sept.
Most other plants are propagated by seed, cuttings,
division or layering and sent to you potted.
Some items may be shipped bare rooted in winter.

SHIPPING
Shipping is automatically calculated based on plant size and then sent in a suitably sized box. Rural delivery will incur a higher freight charge.
Pick up option (from Mosgiel) is also available.

Apple Trees

  • Heritage, popular eating and cooking apples trees grafted onto MM106 rootstocks.

  • Trees are grafted during dormancy then potted up awaiting spring.

  • Potted trees can be picked up from Dunedin OR trees can be shipped bare-rooted in winter.

Pear Trees

  • A selection of popular eating & dessert pears grafted onto Quince Rootstocks using an interstem.

  • Trees are grafted during dormancy then potted up awaiting spring.

  • Potted trees can be picked up from Dunedin OR trees can be shipped bare-rooted in winter.

Stone Fruit

  • A selection stone fruits grown either from pips or grafted.

  • Wide range of plum and stone fruit scion wood also available.

  • Trees can be picked up from Mosgiel or shipped bare-rooted in winter at buyers expense.

Currants & Berries

  • A selection of popular currants & berries that grow well in Otago.

  • Cuttings are taken in spring and potted up in PB5 to ensure good growth by summer.

  • Some more rare and interesting berries on the horizon too!

Other Edibles

  • Beneficial edible plants to add to the understory of your food garden.

  • From root crops & perennial vegetables to more interesting and rare edibles.

  • Some items may can be shipped during dormancy to save on shipping costs. Most are potted ready to await their new home.

Bee & Butterfly Plants

  • Beneficial plants to encourage & feed pollinators, nectar for honey-bees and butterflies.

  • Plants to attract a variety of predators, increase biodiversity and balance within the garden.

  • Scented and flowering plants to attract & feed insect life across the seasons.

  • Structural plants to provide habitat for a variety of insects & various garden predators.

Shrubs, Trees & Perennials

  • A variety of common and not so common shrubs and perennials.

  • Plants to suit different growing conditions and soil types.

  • Most are potted up in PB3 or PB5 to ensure good room for growth over the season.

Herbs & Medicinal plants

  • A wide selection of common and some more hard to come by herbs

  • Culinary, cosmetic & medicinal herbs for use in the kitchen.

  • Beneficial herbs for scent in the garden, companions for vegetables or pest deterrents.

  • Most are potted in PB3 or PB5 sizes to ensure good growth over the season.

Tea Plants

  • Herbs that can be brewed as tea.

  • Plants that are edible and can provide benefits to the body - aid digestion, promote sleep etc.

  • Most are grown in PB3 or PB5 size to ensure good growth.

  • Some plants, depending on type can be shipped bare-rooted at the end of winter.

Climbers

  • Climbers to add drama and layers to your garden.

  • Scented or flowering specimens.

  • Most are grown in PB5 or PB12 size to ensure good growth over the season.

  • Use strategically to hide unsightly features in the garden or just add another layer of contrast.

Ground Covers

  • A wide range of various ground covers to suit many soil types. From shade to dry.

  • Vigorous or slow growing to fill lots of different hard to fill spots.

  • Flowering, non-flowering, drought tolerant and ever-green ground covers.

  • Most are potted in PB3 or PB5 to ensure good growth over the season.

Drought tolerant Plants

  • Drought tolerant plants to cover dry areas or mass plant.

  • Some more interesting dry loving plants for contrast and seasonal interest.

  • Many are very hardy and can tolerate long dry spells once established, making those hard to plant areas part of the thriving garden.

Grasses

  • A selection of native and non-native grasses.

  • Adding texture and habitat for insects and small animals.

  • Hardy and tolerant in most soils - good for those hard to fill areas.

  • Ornamental or otherwise - add another layer to the garden.

Scion Wood

  • A wide range of scion wood taken from our family orchards

  • Amounts available may vary so please enquire should you need a larger amount.

  • Scion wood is cut while dormant, wrapped in damp tissue or news-paper then wrapped in a bag to ensure it stays moist in transit. Posted out in winter, in post bags adequate to size/amount.

Pruning & Consultation

  • Pruning service for home orchards and hobby blocks.

  • General maintenance and structural adjustment for neglected or unruly trees.

  • Summer and winter pruning available.

  • Size limit does apply - trees normally best viewed first before hand.
